 What are Orbs?

Is there really that much dust around?

Some people find it difficult to believe that there is enough to cause so many orbs.  Other think there is too much dust around to produce single orbs (most about this later).

What is dust?

According to Wikipedia, dust is "a general name for minute solid particles with diameters less than 500 micrometers".

What causes dust?

In homes and work places most dust comes from skins cells from humans and pets that 'slough off'.

How does dust become airborne?

Dust usually becomes airborne by people moving around and by cleaning, thus disturbing the dust particles, as well as heat from convection, drafts, etc.  It can take dust a long time to settle after it has become stirred up.  In fact, dust is airborne most of the time, only really settling in (say) houses which no-one inhabits.

Try it at home!

You can see for yourself much dust is in the air at any one time.  The best time to see dust is when it's dark and when you got a powerful light source.

If you take a photo in a dark room - but hold the camera side on - you will be able to see all the particles of dust illuminated by the flash.  You can also try this with many bright light sources, e.g. torch or projector.
