What is Depth of Field?
Put simply, Depth of Field
(DOF) is the area, on either side of the photo subject,
which appears 'in focus'.
Remember our diagram from
earlier:

The right-hand horizontal
line is the beginning of the DOF area. This area
extends beyond the subject/person until you reach an
area behind the subject which is out of focus as well!
This helps to explain the photo on the
previous page
which had 'orbs' behind the subject.
Wikipedia presents a very
good representation of DOF:
So why is this important?
Because the DOF changes all
the time; and with that changes our lines of
invisibility and near focus. This has a drastic
impact on orbs. The
next page explains what
effects DOF and what this means the orb photography.
