 What are Orbs?

What about orbs photographed without a flash, or in the day?

A lot of people recognise that the flash is crucially important in taking orb photographs.  Indeed in the experiment reported on this website various factors changed the numbers of orbs photographed in controlled circumstances, but without a flash no orbs were photographed at all.

So are these orbs paranormal?

Some websites tell us that orbs taken during the day, or without flash, or that have their 'own source of light' are in fact paranormal.  We have seen no photographs that support this idea.

I have been sent numerous orbs caught with the lights on where the photographer swears the flash was not activated.  The photographers were not lying: they did not see the flash go off, because they were looking through the viewfinder and it was not noticeable because the room was fairly well lit anyway.

We know that automatic cameras determine automatically whether a flash is used, without our input, but how could I tell a flash really was used? All digital images that have not been changed in any way carry 'EXIF information', internally stored information about what the camera was doing at the time the photograph was taken; although EXIF information does not always tell you whether the flash was used it quite often does.

What if the flash really did not go off?

There are less common occasions where orbs are captured but the flash genuinely did not activate.  There is no reason to think these orbs are paranormal.  The orb zone explanation tells us that a bright light source near to the camera helps to cause orbs.  This light does not need to be flash light, it just most commonly is.  In reality any bright light source is capable of creating orbs: light from a window, a bright overhead light, a torch, etc.

One of the main problems is that most of routinely misremember a lot of details about how photographs were taken.
